Sterlite Copper supports Vadakkusilukkanpatti drinking water project




Thoothukudi: The drinking water project at Vadakkusilukkanpatti village supported by Sterlite Copper has been successfully completed and was handed over to the community recently. In the handing over function, Mr. A.Devaraj, Executive Engineer, TWAD Board dedicated the project to the community in the presence of Mr.D.Dhanavel, Head – Projects, Sterlite Copper.

The project included construction of two borewells, commissioning of eight syntax water tanks with 1000 litres capacity and laying of water pipeline covering 2200 meters. Sterlite sponsored the project based on the request from the villagers as there is an acute shortage of water in the village.

The project was implemented by District Rural Development Agency under ‘Self Sufficiency Scheme’. The cost for this project was Rs 8.1 lakh out of which Rs 2.7 lakh was contributed by Sterlite Copper as people’s contribution. It will benefit 320 families residing in the village to get adequate water facilities.

Sterlite Copper has adopted Vadakkusilukkanpatti village as a model village and has been carrying out various community welfare initiatives at the village like infrastructure development works at school and community hall, renovation of public toilets, providing underground water storage sumps, dust bins, running of evening study centre and rural health clinic.

Sterlite Copper initiates cleaning of Srivaikundam north main channel



Tuticorin : Sterlite Copper has initiated the cleaning work in the north main channel at Srivaikundam anaicut. The inauguration of the project was held at Srivaikundam here on Saturday.

A special pooja was held and the cleaning work was initiated under the supervision of public works department officials in the presence of Mr.D.Udhayasuriyan, Chairman, Tamiraparani Project Committee and Mr.D.Dhanavel, Head, Projects, Sterlite Copper.

The north main channel starts at Srivaikundam and runs upto the tail end of Korampallam covering total distance of 38 kms. At present, the water flow in the north main channel is slowed down due to excess weed growth and as a result, the farmers are unable to get the required quantity of water for irrigation. In this situation, Mr.D.Udhayasuriyan, Chairman, Tamiraparani Project Committee submitted a memorandum to Sterlite requesting the company to sponsor the cleaning work in the north main channel. The company reviewed the proposal along with public works department officials and accepted the farmers request by allotting Rs 10 lakh for the project.

By undertaking this work there will be free flow of water in the north main channel which will benefit 50000 farmers covering around 25000 acres of agricultural land. The cleaning work is expected to be completed within a month. Mr.M.Kumaravendhan, General Manager – Projects, Sterlite Copper was also present during the event.

Sterlite Copper bags Best Safety Practices Award

Tuticorin : Sterlite Copper has bagged the prestigious GreenTech Best Safety Practices Award under Metals and Mining category.

Mr P Divakaran, General Manager, Operations and Mr R Muralikrishnan, Associate General Manager, Health, Safety and Environment, Sterlite Copper received the award from Shri.Kamleshwar Sharan, President, Greentech Foundation & Shri R.C.Nayyar, IAS, Former Principal Secretary, Department of Labour, Government of Punjab in a function organised at Goa recently.

The award was in recognition to the company’s demonstration of best practices and innovation in Fire, Safety Management and highest level of commitment in reduction of incidents and accidents.

Sterlite has initiated programmes such as Behavioural Based Safety among employees to improve the safe working culture, Single Point Accountability to focus on individual critical protocol such as confined space, fall prevention, mobile equipments etc and adopting world class best practices in safety through benchmarking with best in class smelters in the world.

Greentech safety awards are presented annually by Greentech foundation to recognise excellence in fire and safety management. The purpose of Greentech Safety Award is to promote improvements in workplace safety, encourage those responsible for workplace safety management and recognition of workplace safety as an ethical responsibility to both employer and employees.

More than 150 industries across the country participated in this event.

Sterlite honours district toppers

Tuticorin: Sterlite Copper presented its 15th Scholastic Excellence Awards at a function held at Sterlite Township here on Wednesday. Mr.APCV Chockalingam, Honorary Secretary, VOC Education Society presented the awards to the district toppers of 10th and 12th public examinations.

The first, second and third rank holders of 12th standard examination were conferred with a certificate and a cash prize of Rs 50,000, Rs 30,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively. The first, second and third rank holders of 10th standard examination were presented a certificate and cash prize of Rs 25,000, Rs 20,000 and Rs 15,000 respectively. Mr.P.Ramnath, Chief Executive Officer, Sterlite Copper presented awards to the schools as well as teachers who produced rank holders.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr.APCV Chockalingam said, “I appreciate the efforts taken by Sterlite to motivate underprivileged children to go for higher education.”

Mr.P.Ramnath congratulated all the award winners and said that Sterlite was privileged to be part of their success and will continue to support the cause of education. He also added that Sterlite is giving educational scholarships to poor children every year.

In the class 12 exam category, V.Sai Lakshmi (1181 marks) of Kamalavati Higher Secondary School, K.Karthika (1180 marks) and R.Bagavathy (1175 Marks) of Spic Nagar Higher Secondary School received the awards from Mr.APCV Chockalingam.

Sterlite distributes free notebooks to school students


Tuticorin: Sterlite Copper distributed free notebooks to the school students belonging to the Government school of Therku Veerapandiapuram at Tuticorin. In a function organised by Sterlite Copper, Mr.Subbiah, Panchayat President, Therku Veerapandiapuram distributed free notebooks to over 100 students of Therku Veerapandiapuram in the presence of Mrs.A.Sumathi, Head – Asset Optimisation, Sterlite Copper.

Sterlite distributed the notebooks as the students did not have sufficient notebooks for carrying out the classroom work at home. Sterlite’s other initiatives to promote education include literacy project for girl children, presenting scholastic excellence awards and providing scholarships to encourage students from villages to pursue higher education.

There are opportunities to set up downstream industries in Thoothukudi, says Sterlite CEO


Tuticorin: There are huge investment opportunities to set up downstream industries in Thoothukudi said Mr.P.Ramnath, Chief Executive Officer, Sterlite Copper. He was addressing a conference on ‘Investment Opportunities at Thoothukudi’ organised by All India Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AICCI), Thoothukudi branch at Chennai recently. Mr.G.K.Vasan, Honourable Union Minister for Shipping was the chief guest of the programme.

“Thoothukudi can be an ideal investment destination due to better road and rail connectivity, port, land availability at competitive rates, assured supply of power as major power plants are nearing completion, setting up of desalination plants for meeting water requirements and availability of manpower,” mentioned Mr.P.Ramnath.

Mr.P.Ramnath said that Sterlite’s copper cathodes, rods, sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, gypsum and ferro sand have numerous applications and can be a source to set up downstream industries in Thoothukudi. “Downstream industries to make Enamelled Copper Wires, Copper strips, Copper Cables, Single Super Phosphate (Phosphatic Fertilizer), Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulphonic Acid (Detergent Intermediate), Sodium Silico Fluoride (water treatment chemical), Copper Slag Grading (Abrasive Industry) can be set up based on the raw materials available from Sterlite”, he added.

He concluded that the company would supply raw materials for these downstream industries on a long term basis which would drive economic growth of the district by improving employment opportunities.

Sterlite extends assistance to Plus Two student

Tuticorin : Mr.T.Jeniston, resident of Inigo Nagar who passed Plus Two examinations with flying colours fighting penury, received financial assistance from Sterlite Copper for pursuing higher studies.

Mr.T.Jeniston who belongs to fishermen community passed the Plus Two examination from St.Lasalle Higher Secondary School, Tuticorin with a score of 1000 marks out of 1200 has now been enrolled for Bachelor of Commerce (Computer Application) at VOC College, Tuticorin.
 
Mr.Pankaj Kumar, Vice President, Operations, Sterlite Copper handed over the challan of the fee paid to the student in a function held at Inigo Nagar. Sterlite would bear the tuition fee for the remaining year of his studies also.

Sterlite decided to provide scholarship considering his academic ability and economic status.
Sterlite’s other initiatives to promote education include Project Ilam Mottukal, where Sterlite supports 5035 girl children for their education and presenting scholastic excellence awards to the toppers of Class X and XII examinations.
