Thoothukudi: As part of Sterlite Ilam
Mottukal Project, Sterlite Copper organised a science mela for girl children of
75 government schools at TNDTA Primary School, Puthiyamputhur here on Thursday.
In the inter-school science competition, nearly
150 children of class one to six from 75 government schools from Thoothukudi participated
and exhibited their scientific experiments. The programme was organized with an objective to
make children understand difficult science concepts in an easy and interactive
manner. More than 2500 girl students witnessed and benefited by the event.
The competition
was based on four themes - scientific reason behind day today life,
current issues with scientific solutions, new concepts/inventions and basic
concepts with an experiment. The winners will be selected based on innovation, experiment
related to the topic, demonstration, explanation, neatness and originality, material
used for the experiment and conclusion. First, Second and Third place winners
were given Rs 4000, Rs 3000 and Rs 2000 respectively which will help to procure
more books to place in the libraries of the schools.
The event was conducted as a part of Sterlite Ilam
Mottukal Project launched by Sterlite in July 2012 with an objective to ensure
that every girl child is provided with quality school education to realise
their fullest potential. For the project, Sterlite Copper has allotted Rs 1.6
crore and will support the education of 6132 girl children from 75 Government
schools in Tuticorin. Additional academic, material and moral support for the
children are the key components of the programme.

Deputy Chairman, V O Chidambaranar Port Trust participated as the chief guest and
inaugurated the programme. Mr.P.Ramnath, Chief Executive Officer, Sterlite
Copper said that the main objective of the programme is to provide opportunity
for the students to understand the
science behind various day-to-day concepts and develop a scientific attitude
towards their life.

Assistant Elementary Education Officer, Ottapidaram, Mrs. Fathima, Assistant
Elementary Education Officer, Thoothukudi Rural, Mr.S.Arul Kumar, Head Master,
TNDTA Primary School, Puthiyamputhur, Mr.Suresh Bose, Head – Human Resources and
Mr.R.Rajasekarapandy, Manager - Community Relations, Sterlite Copper were also
present during the programme.
