Sterlite felicitates Primary Health Centres and health officials for supporting Save A Child’s Heart Programme


Sterlite Industries (I) Ltd (SIIL) felicitated Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and health officials of Tuticorin for their support in implementing ”Save A Child’s Heart Programme” which is a joint initiative of Sterlite Industries and District Health Society, Tuticorin. As part of the programme, free heart surgeries were carried out on underprivileged children afflicted with heart diseases. Sterlite has contributed Rs 80 lakh till now for this programme.

Mr.G.Prakash IAS, District Collector, Tuticorin was the chief guest of the programme and he presented the certificates of honour to 23 Primary Health Centres and 5 health officials in the presence of 44 beneficiaries of “Save A Child’s Heart Programme”. Speaking on the occasion, Mr.G.Prakash said that contribution of private industries like Sterlite for a noble cause is commendable. He also added that IrudhayaPadukappuThittam initiated by the state government has helped the poor to undergo free heart surgery.

Mr.Pankaj Kumar, Associate Vice President, Operations, Sterlite, said, “Sterlite believes that Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives are a way to contribute to the society. Sterlite does not see CSR as charity, not even as a responsibility, but as an opportunity to improve the quality of life of the community”.  He also listed out the various CSR activities carried out by Sterlite.

M.VivekV.Savant, General Manager – Commercial, Sterlite, in his keynote address said that for the last two years, Sterlite has spent Rs 80 lakh for ‘Save A Child’s Heart Programme’ and 94 children from Tuticorin have benefitted since 2008. He also added that all the major health initiatives by the company are implemented in partnership with the district administration.

Two of the 44 beneficiaries also shared their experiences during the event. Dr.S.Uma, Deputy Director, Health Services, Tuticorin, Dr.V.A.RalphSelvin, Deputy Director, Health Services, Kovilpatti, Mr.R.Rajasekarapandy, Head – CSR, Sterlite and Ms.SuganthiChelladurai, Associate Manager – CSR were also present.

STERLITE CONDUCTS FREE MEDICAL CAMP


TUTICORIN: Sterlite Industries (I) Ltd (SIIL) in association with ThirukkurippuThondarNainar Primary School organized a free medical camp at ThirukkurippuThondarNainarPrimary School, Tuticorin.

As part of Sterlite’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives in the field of health, various medical camps are being conducted in different parts of the district regularly. One such medical camp was organized in the city.

More than 400 people benefitted from the camp and the participants were screened by a team of doctors under the supervision of Dr.Kailasam, Chief Medical Officer, Sterlite.

During the camp, urine test, diabetic test, blood pressure test and ECG were carried out on the participants and free medicines were distributed to those who suffered from various physical ailments.

Sterlite distributes free notebooks to poor students


Sterlite Industries (I) Ltd (SIIL) distributed free notebooks to the underprivileged students of evening study centres at Tuticorin.

In a function organised by Sterlite Industries at 24 villages, 2000 poor students of 24 evening study centres received free note books for this academic year. Sterlite has spent Rs 1.5 lakh for distributing the notebooks. Evening study centres are created with an objective to increase the pass percent of students and reduce the school drop outs in Tuticorin district. Students right from class one to class twelve are attending the evening study centres. These students are guided by highly qualified teachers.

Sterlite officials handed over free notebooks to students of evening study centres at Milavittan, South Veerapandiapuram, Inigo Nagar, Pandarampatti and several other villages in Tuticorin.

Sterlite’s other initiatives to promote education include presenting scholastic excellence awards and providing scholarships to encourage students from villages to pursue higher education.

The corporate also extends support by setting up evening study centres, organising capacity building programmes and providing assistance to improve the infrastructure of the schools.

Sterlite supports construction of ground level reservoir at Milavittan


Tuticorin:Sterlite Industries (I) Ltd has extended financial assistance to support the construction of ground level water reservoir at Milavittan village under NamakkuNaameThittam of the government.

Mr.S.R.Srinivasan, Vice President – Projects and Col.S.Krishnan, General Manager – Administration and Security, Sterlite, handed over a cheque for Rs 3.25 lakh to G.Prakash IAS, Tuticorin District Collector in the presence of Mr.Jawahar, Panchayat President, Milavittan.

The total cost for the construction of the reservoir is Rs 6.5 lakh. As there is an acute shortage of water in Milavittanpanchayat, government decided to construct the reservoir under NamakkuNaameThittam through which the villagers can create and maintain community assets, establish water resources and revive them.  The reservoir will help the village to store water and will act as a water resource for the areas coming under Milavittanpanchayat.

Sterlite Industries has adopted Milavittan as model village and various Corporate Social Responsibility activities in the field of health, education, women empowerment and infrastructure development are being carried out by the corporate in the village.     

The company has supported the construction of household toilets, set up two evening study centres and distributed free notebooks to poor students in the village. Company is also running mobile health clinic by which the villagers get free medical counselling and medicines. ‘Project Clean Hand’ has also been launched with an objective to bring behavioural changes in the hand washing habits among rural students.

Sterlite to support farmers of Ottapidaram


Thoothukudi :Sterlite Industries (I) Ltd (SIIL) has launched an agriculture project to support the farmers of Ottapidaram block by facilitating and encouraging adoption of organic farming practices. The initiative also includes distribution of free hybrid vegetable seeds and tissue culture banana saplings in order to achieve high production with low investment.

In the project launching function held at Ottapidaram, Mr.Suresh Bose, General Manager – Human Resources, Sterlite handed over a cheque for Rs 3,17,120 as first instalment to Mr.V.LouisRajarathinam, Joint Director, Agriculture Department, Tuticorin. The total cost of the project is Rs 5 lakh.

The project was initiated by Sterlite in partnership with Ottapidaram Horticulture department to create awareness on use of organic farming coupled with modern technology for horticulture crops among farmers of Ottapidaram block.

During the function, 40 farmers received hybrid chilly seeds weighing 3.2 kgs, 20 farmers received hybrid tomato seeds weighing 0.8 kgs and another 20 farmers received hybrid brinjal seeds weighing 1.6 kgs. Sterlite decided to distribute free hybrid vegetable seeds as it would facilitate higher production with low investment. In addition to this, 30000 tissue culture banana saplings costing Rs 3.6 lakh will be distributed shortly to 30 farmers (1000 each) as they cannot afford Rs 12000 to buy hybrid banana seeds for every acre.

During the launch of the programme, Mr.V.LouisRajarathinam lauded the efforts of Sterlite for showing interest in the development of farmers of Ottapidaram region. Due to this project, 110 farmers from Duraisamipuram, Ottapidaram, Thennampatti, Kollankinarau, Puthiyamputhur, Jambulingapuram and Kakkarampatti of Ottapidaram block will be benefitted.

Mr.M.Kanakaraj, Assistant Director, Horticultute Department, Ottapidaram explained how practical demonstrations would help in the farmers’ development and also mentioned other projects undertaken by the horticulture department.

Sterlite Industries supported the District Administration in Pulse Polio Immunization drive...


Sterlite Industries supported the District Administration in Pulse Polio Immunization drive by providing vehicles to four primary health centers on 23rd January 2011. ( Mapilaiyurani, Pudukottai, Mullakadu & Mudivaithanenthal)

The Primary health center supported by us has covered 19,053 children under this special pulse polio program.

Around 14 children have been immunized in Tamira Sterlite Township campus.

Sterlite supports drinking water project at Therku Veerapandiapuram

Tuticorin: Tuticorin based Sterlite Industries (I) Ltd has extended financial assistance to support the proposed drinking water project in Therku Veerapandiapuram village in the district.

Mr.K.Pankaj, Associate Vice President – Operations, Sterlite handed over a cheque for Rs 17 lakh to Mr.Ponraj, Panchayat President, Therku Veerapandiapuram in the presence of Mr.Mohan, MLA, Ottapidaram constituency here on Saturday at a function held at Tamira Niketan situated in Sterlite campus.

The total cost of the project is Rs 34 lakh and will be carried out under state government’s Namakku Naame Thittam. Out of the total project cost, Sterlite has donated 50 % of the cost as Therku Veerapandiapuram villagers’ contribution. The project will benefit 4000 people of Therku Veerapandiapuram, A.Kumareddiyarpuram and T.Kumaragiri villages.

According to the plan, three overhead tanks with a capacity of 30,000 litres each and water sump with a capacity of 50,000 litres will be constructed and the stored water will be distributed to the people in the villages frequently.

Sterlite Industries has adopted Therku Veerapandiyapuram village and various Corporate Social Responsibility activities in the field of health, education, women empowerment and infrastructure development are being carried out by the corporate in the village.      

The company has initiated child friendly village project, project clean hand and has also extended financial support to construct household toilets as part of creating Therku Veerapandiapuram village as a model village. Scholarship has also been provided to the students in the village and has setup evening study centres and tailoring centres.

Sterlite extends financial assistance to M.Tech Student

Sterlite Industries (I) Ltd (SIIL) has extended financial assistance to M.Raymond Julie, an M.Tech student at Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli.

Col.S.Krishnan, General Manager – Admin & Security, Sterlite presented a cheque for Rs 20,000 to Raymond Julie in a small function held at Sterlite premises here on Wednesday. 

The cheque was presented towards her tuition fees for second year studies. Sterlite decided to provide scholarship considering her academic ability and economic status. The company would bear the tuition fee for the remaining years of her studies too.

Mrs.Jesutherese, a widow and mother of Ms.Raymond Julie, runs a roadside idly shop at Tharuvaikulam and has been finding it difficult to run her family of four children with her meagre income.

M.Raymond Julie, a resident of the town who passed the Plus two examinations with flying colours fighting penury was enrolled for M.Tech (Information and Communication Technology) at Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli in 2009. She received financial assistance from the corporate for her first year studies also.

Mr.R.Rajasekarapandy, Head – Corporate Social Responsibility, Sterlite was present on the occasion.

As part of CSR initiatives, Sterlite sponsors students to pursue higher education every year. More than three lakh is being spent by Sterlite for presenting scholarships.

Sterlite’s other initiatives to promote education include presenting scholastic excellence awards to distric toppers, providing free notebooks and uniforms to 1794 students of evening study centres to encourage students from villages to pursue education, improving infrastructure in schools of Tuticorin.

Sterlite supports ‘Little Sisters of Poor’

Tuticorin : Sterlite Industries (I) Ltd (SIIL) has contributed Rs 10 lakh for the construction of  ‘Little Sisters of the Poor’, an old age home in Tuticorin on Wednesday. On behalf of Sterlite, Mr.Prasad Surya Rao, Vice President, Operations and Mr.S.R.Srinivasan, Vice President, Projects, Sterlite handed over a cheque for Rs 10 lakh to Sister Mary Jacintha, Superior of the old age home.

The management of the old age home decided to demolish the old building and construct a new one since they were not able to accommodate its 110 residents. The new building will have the capacity to accommodate all the residents and the construction is proposed to get over by August 2011.

People are accommodated in the home irrespective of caste, creed and religion, based on their economic status and age should be more than 65 years. The company decided to fund the construction of the home as the money will help to shelter the needy people. The old age home is completely dependent upon public charity for its day to day running.

Below are the infrastructure development initiatives by Sterlite in partnership with district administration in Tuticorin :

  • Construction of a Paediatric block at a cost of Rs 80 lakh
  • Swajaldhara drinking water project at Milavittan, Mapillaiyurani, Tuticorin rural and Sankraperi)
  • Construction of overhead tanks at South Veerapandiyapuram and Udangudi
  • Construction of water sump at Vadakkusilukkanpatti and Milavittan
  • Construction of bus shelters at Pudukkottai and Tuticorin Port
  • Construction of sewage canal at Nainarpuram
  • Construction of class room at RC School at Xaveriarpuram
  • Renovation of School building, anganwadi building and toilet complex at Vadakkusilukkanpatti

Recently, Sterlite has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the district administration to sponsor Rs 78 lakh towards the construction of 3.5 km road from Third Gate roundel to Threspuram via American Hospital and Karuppatti Society. The company has also signed MoU with the district administration to sponsor Rs 52 lakh towards the upgradation of Primary Health Centre (PHC) at Mappillaiyurani.

Sterlite initiates cleaning of east main irrigation channel

Tuticorin : Sterlite Industries (I) Ltd (SIIL) in association with Tamiraparani Project Committee has extended support for the cleaning of Tamiraparani Maruthur east main irrigation channel. The inauguration of the project was held at Vallanadu here on Saturday.

A special pooja was held and the cleaning work was initiated in the presence of Mr.Gangadharan, Section Development Officer, Public Works Department and Mr.R.Rajasekarapandy, Head – Corporate Social Responsibility, Sterlite.

Tamiraparani Maruthur east main irrigation channel starts at Srivaikundam dam and runs upto Kadaimadai covering total distance of 16 kms. At present, the water flow in the channel is slowed down due to excess weed growth and as a result, the farmers at the tail end are not able to get the required quantity of water for irrigation. In this situation, Mr.D.Udhayasuriyan, Chairman of Tamiraparani Project Committee submitted a memorandum to Sterlite requesting the company to sponsor the cleaning and desilting work in the east main irrigation channel. The company immediately accepted the farmers request and allotted Rs 4 lakh for the project.

By undertaking this work there will be free flow of water in the east main channel which will benefit 12000 farmers covering 7800 acres of agricultural land.

Sterlite had also supported the farmers by giving free seeds and saplings, and also introducing organic farming techniques to increase productivity. In the last ten days, SIIL has spent Rs 9 lakh for cleaning of irrigation channels in Tuticorin district.

Sterlite distributes course completion certificates to students of Coastal Livelihood Project

Tuticorin : Sterlite Industries (I) Ltd (SIIL) distributed the course completion certificates to the students of Sterlite Coastal Livelihood Project here on Friday. Rev.P.S.Samuel Selvaraj, Treasurer, Thoothukudi – Nazareth Diocese distributed the certificates to 75 beneficiaries who have undergone various courses under the project.

The Coastal Livelihood Project has been undertaken by Sterlite at a cost of Rs 11 lakh as part of its community outreach programme. The project includes courses in Shipping Management & Office automation, Food Production, Beautician & Cosmetics, Tailoring and hand embroidery.

Speaking on the occasion, Col.Krishnan Srinivasan, General Manager, Sterlite said, “Sterlite started the Coastal Livelihood Project with an aim to create employability among the coastal youth in the district.” He also added that the employability of the vocational courses supported by the Sterlite has gone up to 70%. Sterlite has spent Rs 50 lakh for the project since 2007 and has trained 1500 coastal youth under various courses.

Sterlite’s other initiatives to promote education is sponsoring students to pursue higher education every year, presenting scholastic excellence awards to district toppers, providing free notebooks and uniforms to over 1700 students of evening study centres to encourage students from villages to pursue education, improving infrastructure in schools of Tuticorin.
