LNG facility inaugurated

Sterlite, Chinchpada inaugurated India’s third LNG facility on its premises in February.  Mr.Ramesh Nair, Chief Operating Officer inaugurated the facility in the presence of Mr.V.P.Sinha, DGM-LNG, IOCL

This strategic project was successfully commissioned in the least possible time surprising every dignitaries of IOCL. Earlier Sterlite, Chinchpada was using LPG as fuel but always dreamt for an economical but equally pure replacement fuel. The fuel switch over from LPG to LNG would give an advantage to the rod plant of Chinchpada to substantially reduce the cost of production by about 800 Rs/MT.

LNG is being supplied by M/s IOCL, using special cryogenic tankers from Dahej, Gujarat and stored in our cryogenic storage vessel at Chinchpada. When required, the liquid will be fed into ambient vaporiser to provide natural gas to the final line regulator and then to the point of use.

What is LNG?
Liquefied natural gas, or LNG, is natural gas that has been supercooled to minus 162 degrees Celsius. At this temperature, natural gas condenses into a liquid with an energy density of approx 51.5 MBTU per MT.

LNG Supply chain.
Upon discovery of Natural gas resource, the Natural gas is pumped to the surface for ‘sweetening’, a process to remove impurities prior to cooling. The cooling of natural gas to -160ยบ allows it to be transported economically by reducing the volume by 600:1. This process is called liquefaction and produces a stable liquid ready for shipping. Liquefied natural gas is transported in special double-hulled ships. In India the liquefied natural gas is off-loaded as a liquid and pumped from the jetty to storage tanks at Dahej terminal, Gujarat. The tanks are double wall tanks specially designed for their purpose and are well insulated to keep the natural gas at -1600c (In its liquid form). The LNG is then transported in special cryogenic tankers from the terminal to our plant where LNG is stored in the cryogenic storage vessel, and when required, the liquid is fed into an ambient vaporizer to provide natural gas to the final line regulator and then to the point of use.

Sterlite bets on copper slag sales

S. Varadharajan
CHENNAI: Sterlite Industries (India) finds a huge potential for the use of copper slag in concrete applications. The product is derived from the copper concentrate, the raw material for copper smelter. The copper concentrate consists of copper, iron and sulphur and during the smelting operations, iron is removed as iron silicate which is known as copper slag or ferro sand. Addressing visiting presspersons at the Tuticorin facility of the company recently, Mr. Ramesh Nair, Chief Operating Officer, said a test track road made of slag built in the NH-45B stretch was under technical study by the Central Road Research Institute, New Delhi.

With increasing scarcity of river sand and natural aggregates across the country, the construction sector is under tremendous pressure to explore alternative to these basic construction materials. Mr. Nair said States like Kerala, Maharashtra and Gujarat have already banned river sand mining. Therefore, slag has a potential of getting developed as a suitable alternative material to these natural resources.

Presently, world-wide, about 33 million tonnes of slag is generated annually with India contributing 6-6.5 million tonnes. Sterlite is planning to dispose of 1.8-2.4 million tonnes of slag in the next one year. The company had already started receiving frequent queries and a couple of orders from builders, cement and concrete manufacturers.

Some applications, wherein slag has already been recognised world-wide, are cement and concrete manufacturing, filling material, river embankment, ballast material, abrasive, pavement blocks, road and roofing construction, granules, glass and tiles making. Sterlite has carried out several technical studies for the last 10 years through various laboratories on the physical and chemical properties. These studies have concluded that copper slag is non-leachable, and non-toxic, the COO said.

Sterlite's copper slag waste finds new uses

Anil Agarwal-promoted Sterlite Industries India Ltd (SIIL) is planning to convert a waste product of its copper smelting plant at Tuticorin – copper slag — into an alternative material for concrete applications.

The company has already started supplying the material to cement manufacturers and now wants to focus on road, abrasives and other industries.

As per scientific estimate, for every tonne of copper metal produced, around 1.8-2.2 tonnes of slag is generated, according to Ramesh Nair, chief operating officer, Sterlite Industries India Ltd.

“With increasing scarcity of river sand and natural aggregates across the country, construction sector is under tremendous pressure to explore alternative to these basic construction material to meeting growing demand of infrastructure demands,” he said.

In states like Kerala, Maharashtra and Gujarat, sand mining in rivers has already been banned owing to its disastrous impact ecology. “Therefore, slag has a big potential of getting developed as a suitable alternative material to these resources. It is a new business avenue for us and we are going to make revenue out of waste,” said Nair.

At present, across the world around 33 tonnes of slag is generated while in India three copper producers Sterlite, Birla Copper and Hindustan Copper produce around 6-6.5 tonnes of slag at different sites.

According to Nair, the slag is highly stable and non-leachable in nature. The utility of copper slag as alternative material for other industrial / sectoral application has been vastly explored in the last one decade.
