Tuticorin
: Sterlite Copper has initiated the cleaning
work in the north main channel at Srivaikundam anaicut. The inauguration of the
project was held at Srivaikundam here on Saturday.
A special pooja was held and the cleaning
work was initiated under the supervision of public works department officials in
the presence of Mr.D.Udhayasuriyan, Chairman, Tamiraparani Project Committee and
Mr.D.Dhanavel, Head, Projects, Sterlite Copper.
The north main channel starts at Srivaikundam
and runs upto the tail end of Korampallam covering total distance of 38 kms. At
present, the water flow in the north main channel is slowed down due to excess
weed growth and as a result, the farmers are unable to get the required
quantity of water for irrigation. In this situation, Mr.D.Udhayasuriyan, Chairman,
Tamiraparani Project Committee submitted a memorandum to Sterlite requesting
the company to sponsor the cleaning work in the north main channel. The company
reviewed the proposal along with public works department officials and accepted
the farmers request by allotting Rs 10 lakh for the project.
By undertaking this work there will be
free flow of water in the north main channel which will benefit 50000 farmers
covering around 25000 acres of agricultural land. The cleaning work is expected
to be completed within a month. Mr.M.Kumaravendhan, General Manager – Projects,
Sterlite Copper was also present during the event.
