Press Statement

Sterlite Copper welcomes the expert committee appointed by the National Green Tribunal to its copper smelter in Thoothukudi. We are committed to implement any suggestions and improvements recommended by the committee.

We are thankful to the State Government and TNPCB for its support and look forward to continued co-operation with TNPCB and the State government.

Sterlite Copper is one of very few core industries in Tamil Nadu and has been instrumental in the growth of over 500 small and large industries. Over 23, 000 families in Tamil Nadu are dependent on Sterlite for their livelihood. Sterlite has invested over Rs. 4000 crores and contributes to 3.3% of the Gross State Domestic Product of Tamil Nadu. It is our belief that more such industries should come up in a state which has immense potential for development of sectors such as base metal, steel, petroleum etc.

While Sterlite copper is not very profitable due to the nature of its business model, we are committed to developing this industry on account of its contribution to the employment both direct and indirect as well as development of ancillary industries.

We remain dedicated to implementing best global standards of environment, health and safety at our plant and to the well being of the community around us.
