Sterlite extends assistance to Plus Two student

Tuticorin : Mr.T.Jeniston, resident of Inigo Nagar who passed Plus Two examinations with flying colours fighting penury, received financial assistance from Sterlite Copper for pursuing higher studies.

Mr.T.Jeniston who belongs to fishermen community passed the Plus Two examination from St.Lasalle Higher Secondary School, Tuticorin with a score of 1000 marks out of 1200 has now been enrolled for Bachelor of Commerce (Computer Application) at VOC College, Tuticorin.
 
Mr.Pankaj Kumar, Vice President, Operations, Sterlite Copper handed over the challan of the fee paid to the student in a function held at Inigo Nagar. Sterlite would bear the tuition fee for the remaining year of his studies also.

Sterlite decided to provide scholarship considering his academic ability and economic status.
Sterlite’s other initiatives to promote education include Project Ilam Mottukal, where Sterlite supports 5035 girl children for their education and presenting scholastic excellence awards to the toppers of Class X and XII examinations.

Mr.D.Dhanavel, Head – Projects, Mr.R.Selvasankar, General Manager – Projects, Sterlite Copper and employees of Sterlite were also present.

Press Statement

Sterlite Copper welcomes the expert committee appointed by the National Green Tribunal to its copper smelter in Thoothukudi. We are committed to implement any suggestions and improvements recommended by the committee. 

We are thankful to the State Government and TNPCB for its support and look forward to continued co-operation with TNPCB and the State government.

Sterlite Copper is one of very few core industries in Tamil Nadu and has been instrumental in the growth of over 500 small and large industries. Over 23, 000 families in Tamil Nadu are dependent on Sterlite for their livelihood. Sterlite has invested over Rs. 4000 crores and contributes to 3.3% of the Gross State Domestic Product of Tamil Nadu. It is our belief that more such industries should come up in a state which has immense potential for development of sectors such as base metal, steel, petroleum etc.  

While Sterlite copper is not very profitable due to the nature of its business model, we are committed to developing this industry on account of its contribution to the employment both direct and indirect as well as development of ancillary industries.

We remain dedicated to implementing best global standards of environment, health and safety at our plant and to the well being of the community around us.

Sterlite Copper Conducts Free Medical Camp


Thoothukudi: Sterlite Copper organized a free medical camp at Inigo Nagar, Tuticorin here on Tuesday.               

As part of Sterlite’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives in the field of health, various medical camps are being conducted in different parts of the district regularly. One such medical camp was organized in the city on Tuesday.

The camp was inaugurated by Mr.K.Pankaj, Vice President – Operations, Sterlite Copper in the presence of Mr.Gnayam Romalt, All India Fishermen Association and Father Rajesh, Parish Priest, Inigo Nagar.

More than 200 families benefitted from the camp and the participants were screened by a team of doctors under the supervision of Dr.Kailasam, Chief Medical Officer, Sterlite.

During the camp, urine test, diabetic test, blood pressure test and ECG were carried out on the participants and free medicines were distributed to those who suffered from various physical ailments.

Mr.Suresh Bose, Associate Vice President – Human Resources, Mr.Selvasankar, General Manager – Projects and employees of Sterlite including Mrs. J Judy Fernando, Mrs.Maria George Ramona, Mr.John Carton, Mr.James Dulles, Mr.Sahaya Alex, Mr.C Aldrin, Ms.Sahaya Xavier Jancy and Mr.R Canisius participated during the event.

Young Minds wins Sterlite Copper Corporate Trophy 2013


Young Minds defeated Dharangadhara Chemical Works (DCW) to win the inaugural edition of Sterlite Copper Corporate Trophy 2013.
Young Minds team received the Championship trophy and Rs 30,000 cash award from Mr.Sudhakar, Senior Vice President, Ind Bharath Power Infra Limited and Mr.Srinivasan, Vice President, DCW. DCW received the runners up trophy and Rs 20000 cash award.
The tournament was organised by Sterlite Copper in association with Thoothukudi District Cricket Association from 15thMarch to 23rd March 2013. The event was held on league-cum-knock out format with the matches consisting of 20 overs a team.

Sterlite denies allegations

In reference to media reports, we would like to clarify that Sterlite Copper adheres to the highest standards of environment and safety. Sterlite Tuticorin Copper Smelter was under shutdown maintenance since early hours of March 21, 2013 till around 10 AM on March 23, 2013.
 
In the morning hours on March 23, 2013, during plant startup, there were normal emissions within prescribed parameters and since then the plant is functioning normal.
 
A team of government officials have already inspected the Sterlite copper plant on March 23 and 24, 2013 and has verified the plant status. We understand that the District health officials have confirmed that no case of illness was reported due to alleged gas leakage and based on preliminary report by the Government Officials to the District Administration, the District Officials have issued a press note clarifying the situation.
 
The Sterlite management also clarifies that the unfortunate death of one contract workman of power plant was a normal death due to accelerated hypertension and hemorrhagic stroke, which was confirmed by medical reports.
Sterlite Copper has invested more than Rs.500 crores in various pollution control measures, which reflects our commitment to the environment.
 
Sterlite assures that its plant operations are absolutely safe and there is no cause of concern. We request the people of Tuticorin not to rely on any rumours.

Sterlite Copper distributes course completion certificates to students under Coastal Livelihood Project


Tuticorin : Sterlite Copper distributed the course completion certificates to the students who had successfully undergone vocational training under Sterlite Coastal Livelihood Project in a function held at Hotel Bell here on Wednesday.

Mr.D.Gajapathy, Joint Director General of Foreign Trade, Office of DGFT, RA Madurai presented the course completion certificates to 80 students who have undergone vocational training in Desktop Publishing & Tally, Fashion Designing & Garment Making and Mechanic AC & Refrigeration.

Under Sterlite Coastal Livelihood Project (CLP), vocational training is being provided in eight identified trades to the students in partnership with four training institutes. Sterlite spends Rs 14 lakh towards this project every year. SIIL is implementing CLP for the last six years with an objective of providing alternate employment opportunities for the coastal youth. Last year, 86% of the students were employed and their average monthly income is Rs 3500. 220 students from the coastal villages of Tuticorin are getting benefitted through this programme every year. The project has increased the employment opportunities for the youth in the district.

Sterlite Copper distributes mobility aids to differently abled persons


Tuticorin : Sterlite Copper distributed mobility aids to persons with disabilities in a function held at Lucia Centre for the physically challenged here on Sunday.

Rev.Yvon Ambrose, Bishop of Tuticorin Diocese distributed the mobility aids to 110 differently-abled people in the presence of Mr.M.Kumaravendhan, General Manager – Projects and Mr.I.Rajasekar, Head – Business Excellence, Sterlite Copper. The devices included wheelchairs, crutches, artificial limbs and other mobility aids.
“Sterlite Copper has woven social responsibility into its business fabric right from its inception in 1996-97. The aim has always been to go beyond mere 'corporate social responsibility' to understand the real needs and genuine concerns of the people and provide the necessary stimulus to not only address these issues but ensure social involvement, acceptability and sustainability,” said Mr. M.Kumaravendhan. He also added that more than 2.5 lakh people are getting impacted by Sterlite’s community welfare initiatives every year in Tamil Nadu.
