Sterlite to organise Mini Marathon to stress the importance of girl child education


Tuticorin: Sterlite Copper in association with Sports Authority of Tamil Nadu, Thoothukudi district will host a mini marathon for the denizens of Thoothukudi in the city on 3rd March, 2013 (Sunday) from 7 AM onwards.
The objective of the marathon is to stress the importance of girl child education. More than 1000 runners are expected to participate in the event. Mr.Ashish Kumar IAS, District Collector, Thoothukudi will flag off the event in the presence of Mr.P.Ramnath, Chief Executive Officer, Sterlite Copper.
The marathon will be held for runners of five categories: men and women will run a 21 km and 10 km marathon circuit respectively. Boys and girls under 18 years of age will compete in a 10 km and 5 km run respectively while boys and girls under 12 years of age will compete in a 5 km and 3 km run respectively. Walkathon has also been arranged for men and women above 35 years of age who will run a 12 km and 5 km marathon circuit respectively. Cash prizes worth of Rs.90000 will be given out to the winners.

Sterlite organises Inter-School Competition for girl children


Thoothukudi: As part of Ilam Mottukal Project, Sterlite Copper organised an inter-school competition for girl children at RC school, Therespuram here on Saturday.

Sterlite Copper in association with Naandi Foundation conducted the inter-school competition called ‘TALHUNT’, where nearly 1500 children from 72 different schools participated in the competition.  Events such as blasting the balloons, frog race, rhyme singing, filling water in the bottle, obeying the order (listening skill), storytelling, 200m running race, lemon race, memory game, essay writing, ball in the bucket, skipping, spellbee, shot put, dance and speech competitions were organised. The purpose of these events was to provide a platform for the girl children to showcase their hidden talents.

The event was conducted as a part of Ilam Mottukal Project launched by Sterlite in July 2012 with an objective to ensure that every girl child is provided with quality school education to realise their fullest potential. For the project, Sterlite Copper has allotted Rs 1.4 crore and will support the education of 5035 girl children from 72 Government schools in Tuticorin. Additional academic, material and moral support for the children are the key components of the programme.

Mrs A. Sumathi, Head- Health, Safety and Environment, Sterlite copper participated as the chief guest of the programme and distributed the prizes to the winners. “The main objective of the programme is to provide opportunity for the students to exhibit their skills,” said Mrs.A.Sumathi. She also listed out the various initiatives being carried out by Sterlite for the benefit of students in Thoothukudi.

Sterlite observes Road Safety Week


Tuticorin : Sterlite Copper organised a general medical camp and an eye camp for truck drivers as part of 24st Road Safety Week celebration here on Friday.

Sterlite Copper in association with Regional Transport Office, Tuticorin observed Road Safety Week by organising general medical camp and an eye camp for the truck drivers at the truck parking yard near Sterlite Copper in Milavittan.  More than 200 drivers benefited through the camps. Free spectacles and medicines were also distributed during the camps.

Mr.B.Narayanan, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Rural) released the road safety awareness pamphlet in the presence of Mr.Thangavel, Regional Transport Officer, Thoothukudi and Mr.P.P.Markhs, Head  – Logistics, Sterlite Copper.

Speaking at the function, Mr.Thangavel insisted that people should be educated on the need to follow traffic rules strictly and road discipline in order to ensure the safety of vehicle users.
Mr.B.Narayanan appealed to the truck drivers to strictly adhere to the road safety norms.
In his address, Mr.P.P.Markhs said that the Road Safety Week had gained importance because of the rise in the number of vehicles plying on the road.

Dr.R.Kailasam, Chief Medical Officer, Sterlite Copper and Mr. P.Krishnan, Inspector, SIPCOT Police Station were also present during the event.

Sterlite Copper extends financial assistance to purchase exercise therapy equipment


Tuticorin : Sterlite Copper has sponsored Rs 1,78,650 to purchase exercise therapy equipment for a special school here.

Mr.Pankaj Kumar, Head – Operations, Sterlite Copper presented the cheque to Sister Nirmala Mary, Principal, Holy Cross Pearls School, Jothi Nagar.

The school serves 30 students with special needs which helps them to improve their ability to learn by providing specialized teaching techniques.
“Sterlite Copper has woven social responsibility into its business fabric right from its inception in 1996-97. The aim has always been to go beyond mere 'corporate social responsibility' to understand the real needs and genuine concerns of the people and provide the necessary stimulus to not only address these issues but ensure social involvement, acceptability and sustainability,” said Mr.Pankaj Kumar. He also added that more than 2.5 lakh people are getting impacted by Sterlite’s community welfare initiatives every year in Tamil Nadu.

Tuticorin : Sterlite Copper has bagged the The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) appreciation award for its outstanding contribution in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam, Former President of India presented the appreciation plaque to Mr.R.Rajasekarapandy, Head – CSR and Mrs.Suganthi Chelladurai, Associate Manager – CSR in the CSR Summit-cum-Excellence Awards 2012-13 held at New Delhi.  
The award is a recognition of Sterlite’s community welfare programmes which takes ownership of several aspects like Health, Education, Women Empowerment, Livelihood and Rural Infrastructure in Thoothukudi.
The theme of the ASSOCHAM CSR Summit cum Excellence Awards was "Empowering Sustainability - Promoting Responsibility" which discussed the holistic perspective of CSR in the country with insights from various stakeholders.

Sterlite Copper bags Water Efficient Unit Award


Tuticorin : Sterlite Copper has won Water Efficient Unit award during the 9th National Award for Excellence in Water Management 2012 organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) – Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre at Jaipur recently.

Ms.K.S.Parama Kalyani, Associate Manager, Energy and Water and Mr.Ram Sandhipam Adhikaray, Associate Manager, Smelter Planning, Sterlite Copper received the certificate of merit and award from Dr.Purushottam Agarwal, Principal Secretary – Public Health Engineering Department & Ground Water, Government of Rajasthan during the event. The objective of the award scheme was to recognise excellence in water management in industries and facilitate sharing of information by excellent water efficient companies.

Sterlite was adjudged water conserving unit amongst stiff competition from Tata Steel Limited, ITC, Essar Steel Limited, Mahindra & Mahindra, Larsen & Toubro Limited etc.
