Boomi Pooja performed for drinking water project sponsored by Sterlite Copper at Vadakkusilukkanpatti


Thoothukudi : Boomi pooja was performed for the drinking water project sponsored by Sterlite Copper at Vadakkusilukkanpatti. The pooja was performed in the presence of Mr.Veerabaghu, Block Development Officer, Pudukkottai, Mr.Shanmugavel, Chairman, Pudukkottai union and Mrs. Mariaponnammal, President, Vadakkusilukkanpatti.

The scope of the work includes construction of two borewells, commissioning of eight syntax water tanks with 1000 litres capacity and laying water pipeline covering 2200 meters.

Sterlite decided to sponsor the project based on the request from the villagers as there is an acute shortage of water in the village. The cost for this project is Rs 8.1 lakh out of which Rs 2.7 lakh will be contributed by Sterlite Copper as people’s contribution.

The project will be implemented by District Rural Development Agency under ‘Self Sufficiency Scheme’. It will benefit 320 families residing in the village to get adequate water facilities.

Sterlite Copper has adopted Vadakkusilukkanpatti village as a model village and has been carrying out various community welfare initiatives at the village like infrastructure development works at school and community hall, renovation of public toilets, providing underground water storage sumps, dust bins, running of evening study centre and rural health clinic.

Sterlite Copper observes Fire Safety Week


Tuticorin: Awareness campaign on Fire Safety was organised by Sterlite Copper as part of its National Fire Safety Week celebrations
During various events organised during the week, a surprise emergency evacuation and rescue drill was conducted in the administration building at Sterlite. Mr.C.Manoharan, Divisional Fires Officer, Tamil Nadu Fire & Rescue Services addressed the gathering and briefed the employees about fire extinguisher operation, lifting techniques and ‘stop-drop-roll’ technique.
Training programmes on rescue and lifting techniques for employees and contractors, a programme on domestic safety for housewives of employees were organised. Competition on fire extinguisher operation was also conducted.
Similar campaign on fire prevention was also organised for the public at Milavittan were fire safety pamphlets were distributed to them to make them aware of various fire prevention techniques.

The programmes were organised by the safety department of Sterlite.

DCW wins Sterlite Copper Corporate Trophy 2012


Tuticorin: Dharangadhara Chemical Works (DCW) defeated VOC Port Trust by 6 wickets to win the inaugural edition of Sterlite Copper Corporate Trophy 2012.

In the final match held on Sunday under floodlights at SAV ground, VOC Port Trust scored 71 runs losing all wickets. Batting second, DCW achieved the target with ease in 17 overs losing just 4 wickets. Mr.Raj of DCW was adjudged as Man of the Match for his three wickets and 18 (not out) runs. He also bagged the Player of the Tournament Award.

DCW team received the Championship trophy and Rs 30,000 cash award from Col.S.Krishnan, General Manager –Administration & Security, Sterlite Copper. VOC Port Trust received the runners up trophy and Rs 20000 cash award.

The tournament was organised by Sterlite Copper in association with Thoothukudi District Cricket Association from 11th April to 22nd April 2012. The event was held on league-cum-knock out format with the matches consisting of 20 overs a team. Semi-finals and final were played under flood lights.

Sterlite Copper sponsors Rs 20 lakh to develop infrastructure at Thoothukudi District Sports Stadium


Thoothukudi: Sterlite Copper has sponsored Rs 20 lakh to develop infrastructure at Thoothukudi District Sports Stadium.

Mr.R.Rajasekarapandy, Head – Corporate Social Responsibility, Sterlite Copper handed over a cheque for Rs 20 lakh to Mr.Ashish Kumar IAS, District Collector, Thoothukudi at the district collectorate here on Wednesday.

Sterlite Copper is sponsoring the infrastructure work on the request from the district administration. The district administration has planned to carry out several renovation works at the Thoothukudi district sports stadium. The total cost of the project is estimated as Rs 60 lakh out of which Sterlite Copper has come forward to sponsor one-third of the project cost of Rs 20 lakh. The renovation work will be carried out by the Public Works Department under Tamil Nadu government’s Self Sufficiency Scheme.  

Improvements will be done to the football court, 400 metre track, walkers’ track, drainage system at district sports centre and vehicle parking area will be developed with proper fencing. This will benefit more than 2000 people who are using the facilities of the stadium every day.
