Sterlite donates Rs 2 lakh for construction of toilet complex at Manalmatha Higher Secondary School


Thoothukudi : Sterlite Copper has donated Rs 2 lakh towards construction of toilet complex at Manalmatha Higher Secondary School, Sokkankudieruppu in the district.

On behalf of Sterlite, Mr.C.Rajendiran IRS, Commissioner of Customs, Thoothukudi presented the cheque for Rs 2 lakh to Mr.M.Jeyasingh Cruz Angelus, Headmaster, Manalmatha Higher Secondary School.

Though the school has been functioning for the last hundred years, there is no proper toilet facility for the students. At present, 278 students are studying in the school out of which 168 students are girls. Bhoomi pooja was also held during the occasion and the construction of the toilet facility will be completed in 40 days.

The school’s approach for help from various organisations went in vain. The sponsorship from corporate was based on the school’s inability to collect necessary fund to construct the toilet facility and the consistent performance of the students in academics. Mr.C.Rajendiran also planted a tree at the school premises during the event.

Sterlite has been carrying out various initiatives to develop the infrastructure in Tuticorin. The initiatives include construction of household toilets in villages, drinking water project at Milavittan and SV Puram, renovation of 20 noon meal centres in Tuticorin and Swajaldhara Drinking Water Project benefitting 43 villages.

Mr.M.Raja Climax, Superintendent of Central Excise, Thoothukudi, Mr.Sridhar Narasimhan, Associate Vice President, Finance, Mr.Mukul Agarwal, Associate General Manager, Indirect Taxation, Mr.R.Rajasekarapandy, Head – Corporate Social Responsibility, Sterlite Copper and students of the school were also present during the occasion.

Sterlite extends assistance to Engineering student


Tuticorin : Sterlite Copper has extended financial assistance to Mr.M.Ramaraj, a B.E student at PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore.

Mr.Suresh Bose, General Manager – Human Resources, Sterlite Copper presented a cheque for Rs 32,380 to Mr.R.Ramaraj in a function held at Sterlite premises here on Saturday. 

The cheque was presented towards his tuition fees for third year studies. Sterlite decided to provide scholarship considering his academic ability and economic status. The company would bear the tuition fee for the remaining years of his studies too.

Mr.M.Ramaraj, a physically challenged student and a resident of Idaiyarthavanai near Surandai in the district who passed Plus Two examinations with flying colours fighting penury received financial assistance from Sterlite for his first and second year of studies.

Mr.R.Rajasekarapandy, Head – Corporate Social Responsibility, Sterlite was also present during the event.

As part of CSR initiatives, Sterlite sponsors students to pursue higher education every year. More than three lakh is being spent by Sterlite for presenting scholarships.

Sterlite’s other initiatives to promote education include presenting scholastic excellence awards to district toppers, providing free notebooks and uniforms to more than 1700 students of evening study centres to encourage students from villages to pursue education, improving infrastructure in schools of Tuticorin.

Sterlite celebrates Independence Day


Tuticorin : Sterlite Copper celebrated the 65th Independence day with patriotic fervor on the industry premises here on Monday.

Mr.K.Pankaj, Associate Vice President - Operations, Sterlite Copper unfurled the national flag and took the salute of the security personnel. As part of the celebrations, security personnel also put up a ceremonial parade.

Delivering the address, Mr.K.Pankaj said that it is important for all of us to remember those who sacrificed their lives for the country. He also presented prizes to the security officers and fire service personnel for their outstanding devotion to duty.

Colonel S.Krishnan, Chief Security Officer and SIIL employees were also present during the occasion.

Educational tour organised for students of Sterlite evening study centres


Sterlite Copper organised educational tour for the students of its evening study centres here on Sunday.

58 students from Milavittan village attended the tour accompanied by Sterlite employees. They were taken to the Science Centre at Tirunelveli. Mr.Vinod Wagh, General Manager, Engineering Services, flagged off the educational tour in front of Sterlite main gate.

All students are from economically weaker families of the society who cannot afford to take their children on a tour. The objective of the tour is to create interest on the students’ mind on science subject. The visit helped the students to understand the basics of science by seeing the models and experiments displayed at the centre.

“Students have a wrong perception that science is hard to learn. The tour was organised in order to help the students to understand the science concepts,” Mr.Vinod Wagh, General Manager, Engineering Services, Sterlite Copper said.

Sterlite distributes free notebooks to students


Sterlite Copper distributed free notebooks to the students of Seena Vana Government Higher Secondary School at Tuticorin. In a function organised by Sterlite Copper, Mrs.M.S.Parimala, Chief Educational Officer, Tuticorin distributed 1500 free notebooks to the students of the school here on Thursday.

Sterlite has spent over Rs 3 lakh for distributing the notebooks this academic year.

Sterlite also planted tree saplings inside the District Education Office complex as part of its green drive. First tree sapling was planted by Mrs.M.S.Parimala. Sterlite regularly holds tree plantation drives at various places in and around Tuticorin.

“Any organisation which is interested to plant trees in the district can approach us and we would be happy to partner with them to create awareness about the importance of tree plantation,” Mr.R.Rajasekarapandy, Head – Corporate Social Responsibility, Sterlite Copper said.

Students excel in Sterlite’s vocational course

Tuticorin : Students under Sterlite Coastal Livelihood Project witnessed cent percent result in the tailoring course examination conducted by the Government of Tamil Nadu during 2010-11. The course was conducted by Sterlite in partnership with St.Ann’s tailoring and embroidery centre, Tuticorin.

Mr.Suresh Bose, General Manager, Human Resources, Sterlite Copper distributed the merit certificates to the students in a function organised at St.Ann’s tailoring and embroidery centre here on Wednesday.

15 students who appeared in the examination passed in first class. This is the fifth successive year, the students of tailoring course achieve cent percent result in the government examination on diploma in technical course. The course is sponsored by Sterlite under its Coastal Livelihood Project with an objective to empower coastal women.

Other than tailoring course, Mechanic AC & Refrigeration, Electrical Technician, Diploma in Desktop Publishing Operator & Tally, Electrician training, Beautician & Cosmetics and  Diploma in Fashion Designing & Garment Making  course are the certificate courses offered through this project.

200 students are getting benefitted through this project every year where only 25 % of the course fee is paid by the students for studying the courses. The rest 75 % is contributed by Sterlite Copper. Sterlite is spending Rs 14 lakh for this project.

The aim of the project is to create employability among the coastal youth in the district.

Sterlite Copper is implementing CLP for the last six years with the objective of providing alternate employment opportunities for the coastal youth. Last year, 84% of the students were employed and their average monthly income is Rs 4000.
