Sterlite Copper extends financial assistance to M.Tech Student

Sterlite Copper has extended financial assistance to M.Raymond Julie, an M.Tech student at Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli.

Mr.C.Prabakaran, Associate Vice President – Finance, Sterlite Copper presented a cheque for Rs 20,000 to Raymond Julie in the presence of Mr.R.Rajasekarapandy, Head – Corporate Social Responsibility in a function held at Sterlite premises here on Wednesday. 

The cheque was presented towards her tuition fees for second year studies. Sterlite decided to provide scholarship considering her academic ability and economic status. The company would bear the tuition fee for the remaining years of her studies too.

Mrs.Jesutherese, a widow and mother of Ms.Raymond Julie, runs a roadside idly shop at Tharuvaikulam and has been finding it difficult to run her family of four children with her meagre income.

M.Raymond Julie, a resident of the town who passed the Plus two examinations with flying colours fighting penury was enrolled for M.Tech (Information and Communication Technology) at Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli in 2009. She received financial assistance from the corporate for her first year studies also.

As part of CSR initiatives, Sterlite sponsors students to pursue higher education every year. More than three lakh is being spent by Sterlite for presenting scholarships.

Sterlite’s other initiatives to promote education include presenting scholastic excellence awards to district toppers, providing free notebooks and uniforms to 1794 students of evening study centres to encourage students from villages to pursue education, improving infrastructure in schools of Tuticorin.

Sterlite Copper observes National Safety Day

Sterlite Copper observed 40^th National Safety Day on its premises in a grand manner here on Friday. Safety pledge, both in English and Tamil was taken by all the employees as part of safety day celebration.

Hoisting the safety day flag and speaking at the function, Mr.Ramesh Nair, Chief Operating Officer, Sterlite Copper endorsed the perpetual commitment of management towards improvement of health & safety performance in the plant.

“Each and every employee is a safety steward himself, therefore all action taken by an individual should match highest standards of health & safety,” he added. Mr.Ramesh Nair also stressed the importance of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) and urged all the employees to adhere to the laid down rules and regulations.

The company has celebrated Safety month and will continue to focus on increasing awareness on health & safety amongst employees, families and contractor workers. Various competitions including essay writing, slogan writing, 'spot the hazard', posters designing, drawing competitions for all SIIL employees, contract workers and kids were conducted. Mrs.A.Sumathi, Associate General Manager, HSE and Mr. Sandeep Acharya, Head - Safety, Sterlite Copper were also present.

Sterlite copper donated bed materials worth Rupees two lakhs  to Government hospital, Tuticorin on 19th February 2011

On behalf of company Col.Krishnansrinivasan ,GM-Admin & Security handed over the bed materials to the Dean of Thoothukudi Medical college MrRathinam

The event was witnessed by Hon Minister for social welfare MsGeethaJeevan,, Mayor of Tuticorin and staff members of medical college.

The highlight of the event is the bed materials supplied are manufactured by Sterlite women self help group and they received a cheque for Rs 59,500 from Hon Minister  for delivering the product in time

Child friendly Village program

Sterlite Industries celebrated the first birthday of female baby Poojaat  TherkkuveeraPandiaPuram village  on 8th  February 2011

Sterlite industries support economically poor students to complete graduation.

Sterlite industries in association with VOC  college has instituted  Academic scholarship to support economically poor students to complete graduation.

This year five students doing  B.Sc and B.com have benefitted out of this scholarship.

The cheque was handed over to the college principal in a simple function held at college campus on 9th Februray 2011

Saltpan worker S.Dhanalakshmi of Thoothukudi is now a mini-entrepreneur. The 32-year-old, who, about five years back, was a labourer, now employs about a couple of labourers in her mushroom cultivation unit.

Today, Ms.Dhanalakshmi is a master trainer in Thoothukudi in mushroom cultivation and trains over 150 persons from various parts of the state, including Chennai. She has formed 25 women self-help groups (SHGs) in the district and also markets mushroom in the district and nearby areas. Acknowledging her phenomenal success, CII conferred the ‘Women Exemplar Award’ on her in 2008.

All this has been possible by the women empowerment initiative of copper smelting unit Sterlite Industries, which helped her start her venture in 2006 with an investment of Rs 10,000. “Thanks to the encouragement from the company and MahalirThittam, I can run the family with my own income ,” Ms.Dhanalakshmi told this newspaper.

Like Ms.Dhanalakshmi, Ms.Jayarani, a homemaker, provides employment to many. No she earns investment of Rs 30,000 monthly from her mattress business. She has got an order from Co-optex to supply beds, pillows and cushions. “When deputy chief ministerM.K.Stalin visited Thoothukudi recently, he handed over the Co-optex work order,” Ms.Jayarani said.

The company’s foray into creation of women SHGs began in 1997 in Madathur village where it trained women in tailoring-they later set up their own readymade garment unit. “Now there are over 1050 Sterlite assisted SHGs in Thoothukudi with a membership of over 15,000 women. The cumulative savings of the women SHGs is up to Rs 4.5 crore with an average monthly income of Rs 3,000 per woman,” Ms.SuganthiChelladurai, Associate Manager, Corporate Social Responsibility, Sterlite Industries, said.

Around 1000 SHGs have availed of bank loans of up to Rs 4 lakh and about 200 SHGs are engaged in independent entrepreneurial ventures.

“Sterlite plans to align the SHGs into a cooperative in future. This would open the doors for state funding to scale up operations,” says Mr.Ramesh Nair, COO, Sterlite.
